What must a rent receipt contain for an HRA claim?

Please read. A rent receipt records a payment that actually happened. Issuing receipts for rent that was never paid, in order to claim a tax exemption, is not something this tool is for. Rules around HRA are set by the Income Tax Department and your employer may ask for more than a receipt.

What goes on a rent receipt

For an HRA claim, a receipt is expected to show all of the following. This generator fills each one in:

Tenant's name — the person who paid the rent.
Landlord's name — the person who received it, with space to sign.
Address of the rented premises.
Amount paid, in figures and written out in words.
The period the rent covers — usually one calendar month.
Date of payment and how it was paid.
Landlord's PAN, where the year's rent exceeds ₹1,00,000.

Why the amount is written in words

Figures can be altered with a pen; words are much harder to change. Writing "Rupees Eight Thousand Only" beside "INR 8,000.00" is the oldest anti-tampering convention there is, and it is why receipts and cheques still do it. Note that paise are named separately — "Rupees One Thousand Five Hundred and Paise Fifty Only" — because "…Five Hundred and Fifty Paise" reads as a different number entirely.

Revenue stamps

By convention a cash payment of ₹5,000 or more carries a one-rupee revenue stamp, signed across by whoever received the money. When you pick Cash and the amount is ₹5,000 or above, the PDF prints a marked box for it. Paid by UPI, cheque or bank transfer, the bank record is your evidence and no stamp is expected.

Monthly, or one receipt for the year?

Employers generally want receipts covering the months being claimed, which in practice means one per month or one per quarter for the financial year. A single annual receipt is often refused. Ask your payroll team what they accept before you make twelve of them.
